Electrolysis is the process by which an electric current is used for an otherwise non-spontaneous reaction. Although electrolyzer is frequently used in the production of hydrogen by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen, there are various other applications of electrolysis in the production of difficult metals, elements, chemical compounds, and organic compounds.

Rechargeable battery

Electrolyzers are used in the production of rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries regain their cell potential by the process called reversible cell reactions. Sulphuric acid is commonly used as an electrolyte in rechargeable batteries. They can be charged and discharged numerous times. There are a different variety of batteries for different applications

Any otherwise worthless metals can be coated by dissolved metal cations using electrolysers. The process uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a thin coherent metal coating on an electrode. E.g. chromium plating, Copper Plating

Purification or refining of metals

Metals can be purified by Electrolysers. Electrolytic refining is widely used in Industries for refining crude metal extracted from ores.

The technique uses an equivalent amount of pure metal from the electrolyte which is deposited on the cathode. The soluble impurities go into the solution and the insoluble impurities settle down at the bottom of the anode and known as anode mud. Eg copper, lead, etc

Production of chlorine and caustic soda using Electrolysers

The Chloralkali refers to the two chemicals (chlorine and an alkali) which are simultaneously produced as a result of the electrolysis of salt water.

Production of sodium chlorate and potassium chlorate

Chlorates are used as general dry oxidizers in laboratories.

It also acts as a bleaching agent for cellulose, paper pulp, flour, and oils and for cleaning and detaining leather.

Electrolyzers are widely used in the production of sodium chlorate and potassium chlorate. The process is carried out by oxidizing the solutions of sodium chlorate by electrolysis.
